of course the day before this arrived, we had incident where the oven was on, but not on.. so when this arrived the next day i was excited to try it out. i turned on my stove burners, and tested and it immediately went crazy. after determining it does indeed work, i found out my oven was leaking small amounts due to incomplete combustion on the pilot light. i can't wait to test the rest of the gas lines in the house. will give me a piece of mind having this thing around. it is a little plastic tool, but it seems like its quality, no worse than any of those voltage detector wands. the read out has multiple levels/steps of gas detection, and will turn from green to orange to red, depending on the amount of gases detected. and the alarm will sound increasingly more urgent as it rises. this will be a good tool to have lying around, just incase. i dont know if i would trust it as the final say all, but it's one of those basic tools, thats good to have. I have a few natural gas devices at home and wanted something to check for leaks. Yes, if there's a leak you'll generally smell it, but sometimes if the leak is very minor or if you've become sensitized to the smell you'd be hard pressed to find the source. I've tested this on the gas range and near the gas water heater and outdoor BBQ. Works perfectly. If the gas is running without a flame, the closer I get the higher the bars go, and of course there is a loud beeping. You can adjust the sensitivity once you're closer to pinpoint the source if you can't initially find it. The unit requires 30 seconds of air exposure where there is NO gas in order to calibrate. This has to be done each time you turn it on, so keep that in mind as this won't be useful if you need a very fast reading without delays. Still, 30 seconds isn't that long and is consistent with other similar units. Shortly after getting this I actually had a real use case! I was at my parents and smelled gas outside. I figured it was coming from their gas meter but couldn't find the exact spot as there were a few pipes and hoses there. Sure, I could use water and soap but I pulled this out and could actually pinpoint the specific point where the leak was! It turned out to be where a pipe and hose connected, the joint had a tiny leak. The gas company came and found the same spot and fixed it. Wow, this probably saved us from a dangerous situation! My only slight negative to this detector is that it doesn't have the flexible neck extension. I've used identical devices with the extension, which is very convenient to get into tight spaces that are difficult to reach. This one might be harder to get into small spots. Still, the tradeoff is compactness, this detector is definitely a lot smaller. Overall this is certainly a great buy for anyone with any natural gas appliances at home. Read more
