By no means am I an expert at the exact cleaning abilities of this air purifier or the exact terms used when comparing the specifications of it to other models. Thankfully, you can find those in other reviews. I will describe my impressions and what I have found to be true with this air purifier, both negative and positive. First, some have commented on the smell the unit emits. The manual itself describes that you might notice a smell in the first few hours of usage, but it is nothing horrible. It says it comes from the carbon prefilter and the odor did disappear after the first night of usage. That was not a huge deal to me and it likely occurs in many air purifiers. Second, I have noticed a difference in the air. Some noticeable smells have been dramatically reduced and it certainly helped with allergies. While we were looking to improve the air condition for allergies, we also wanted an air purifier to help with odor (specifically from a wood burning fireplace). This purifier helped in both areas. Third, do not underestimated the noise this unit generates. I noticed a few people commenting on it, but I thought that surely it couldn't be that loud. I was wrong. There is no way you could leave it on its highest setting (unless you were not at home). We leave the unit on the lowest speed at all times and admittedly the noise it produces is within reason. We do turn it off at times (while watching a movie, etc). The noise produced on the lowest speed is okay and I did not see a reason for returning it based on sound alone. However, I think they could have lowered the noise by dissipating the air flow a little bit more. It's not really the machine making so much noise as much as it is the air flow being generated. Speaking of airflow, this unit is very powerful! I was impressed by its power. I use it in a fairly large space and it handles it just fine. I was also impressed by the easy access to filters. Most units do not make it that easy to access the filter for cleaning/replacement, but it is super simple on the 50250. Overall, I really like this unit. It does make some noise, but it also gets the job done and that's what is most important. For the price to quality ratio, this unit would be hard to beat! Read more

This air purifier is very portable and quiet, even on higher settings. I have a pet, so I’m hoping it helps reduce dander and dust around the house. I still get allergies every now and then, but I guess the purifier can only do so much. It’s lightweight yet sturdy, and the design looks aesthetic. It blends nicely with our home. What I really like is that it comes with a 2-year warranty, which gives peace of mind. I noticed a difference in air quality the first day. My nose and sinuses almost totally cleared after a week. I'm using the washable filter only. I live next to a highway, next to a dirty parking lot and across the street is a swampy lake that smells and has geese droppings everywhere. My nose felt like it had cotton stuffed up there all the time. (I never suffered from allergies or sinus before, but they have been getting worse every year after age 60). I bought a new vacuum cleaner thinking that would help. It helped the rug a lot, but not much at all for my breathing. It cleans the air in my living room dining room really well. I will never use anything else. I first bought a Honeywell 50250 True HEPA air purifier in 2007. I have bought other Honeywell air purifiers since, and other brand air purifiers, but none were as good as this. Kaz stopped making it for awhile, then more recently brought it back, only this time they weren't selling it in Canada. So I've had to buy two from US sellers on Amazon. I have multiple allergies, and I live in an industrial city where breathing the air is like smoking X number of cigarettes a day. Contrary to popular opinion, the air in my home is cleaner than the air outside. If I DO open the windows to "air out" the place, I then have to close the windows and run my two Honeywell 50250s on full for an hour to clean that "fresh" air. I've never been able to sleep well without foam ear plugs, and when I bought my first 50250, I found that the ear plugs are just fine for keeping the noise from the air purifiers out. Yes, they are loud on speeds 2 and 3. You know why? Because they're POWERFUL. I've tried the other, quieter air purifiers that people claim are superior because they're quiet. You know why they're quiet? Because they're inefficient. Here's a story: I have a 50250 in my bedroom and wanted an air purifier in my living room. I bought a highly-praised, quiet Swedish-brand air purifier and put it in the bedroom, and moved the 50250 into the living room. I put the quiet air purifier on high and left the bedroom. I enjoyed fresh, clean air in my living room that day. When I went into the bedroom that night, I couldn't breathe in there; all the nasty things that the 50250 removes had comfortably moved into the bedroom, and the quiet air purifier wasn't doing much of anything to address them, even though the light indicator said the air was 100% great. So I returned the famous air purifier and bought another 50250. Now I can breathe again. I keep both of them on speed 1 most of the time, running 24/7. When I am cooking something smelly, I crank the closest one up to 3 while I cook, then back down to 1 when I'm finished. There are no cooking smells in my apartment. I wish that something this efficient could be fitted into a smaller case, but it can't. This kind of power requires size. I had to admit defeat on finding a smaller air purifier that can come close to the 50250 in terms of efficiency, and settle for giving up some of my floor space if I want to breathe. From now on I will never get anything else. Things to watch for: 1. When you first get your 50250, take out the filter and inspect the motor casing. If you see any cracks, return it immediately. The crack will let lubricant escape and the thing will die. 2. Learn how to take it apart so you can oil it when it starts to squeal. After several years it will do so but with the help of a couple of YouTube videos, I have taken the 50250 apart, lubricated it with 3-in-1 motor oil, put it back together, and had it run for another few years before needing another oiling. You have to lift the handle cap off (a plastic tab may break), unscrew the handle, unscrew and lift off the lid, wiggle up the round washer-thing on the top of the stem, lift off the black rotator piece, then put the oil on the metal stem and spin the stem a bit so the oil works in. Test it by plugging it in and running it on low. When there are no more squeals, reverse and put it all back together again. You don't have to be big and strong to do this: I am a small, senior lady with arthritis, and I did not require help. 3. You may never have to replace the filter! Just make sure you have the black carbon filter over the main filter, to keep out the big stuff. The old carbon filters that came with the 50250 used to be thick. Now Honeywell sells thin ones, so I double them up. Every three months I remove all the filters and vacuum them thoroughly before putting them back. You reset the "Check filter" lights by holding them down for maybe 5 seconds. Generic-brand filters are available on Amazon. The old 50250s all came with a one-piece tall filter. Now I understand that some now come with three shorter filters that stack. That sounds like a pretty inefficient thing to do in a True HEPA air purifier. My most recent (February 2024) 50250 came with the tall, single filter, for which I am grateful. If it had not, I would have spent the money to get a single-piece generic-brand filter. They are just as good, IMO. It's the 50250's casing and fan-power that are truly superior to other air purifiers out there, including Honeywell/Kaz/Helen of Troy's other models. Read more

The two things I was worried about when I bought this was the noise level and the bright blue light. I guess I read a few too many reviews and watched too many YouTube "hear how loud this is" type videos and I made myself rethink my purchase while waiting for it to be delivered. (sounds louder in the videos than in does in my house) It arrived late at night, Fedex brought this at about 9:45 P.M. I guess the size of the box made it necessary, it was probably the bottom box in the truck and the drivers last delivery for the day/night. It was in the original packaging then put inside a larger plain box stuff with crumpled paper,....packaged very well. I love it when a company makes sure your larger, heavy, and expensive item gets to your door in great shape! :) I also have a Kenmore Hepa 130 air cleaner that I thought was pretty big, but that is actually tiny compared to this one! I now have to rethink where this will be now that I have it home. It's as big as my husbands garage shop vac minus the hose and wheels! It seems very solid to me also. Wrapping and attaching the pre filter is simple. The knob on the bottom to remove the filter is very easy to open and close, like my other model maintenance will be quick and easy. The cord could be a tiny bit longer, especially if you need to keep it 3 feet from walls and furniture, a longer cord (like my smaller Kenmore cleaner has) would help to get it past and around furniture without having to use an extension cord. The highest setting (cleaning) is a bit loud, but isn't that bad. To me its like the highest setting on my window A/C unit,...can still hear TV but is noticeable when sitting right next to it. The 2nd setting (day time) isn't bad at all and no trouble hearing the TV,...more like a gentle hum. The lowest setting (sleep setting) I can barely hear it, it's very low. The blue light is bright enough to notice. But personally I don't like bright blue electronics lights. Everything in my house that has one of those bright blue lights has a knickknack of some kind sitting in front of the light so I don't have to see it. I don't even like cars that have the super bright blue dashboard lights. They are just too distracting to me.(the lighter green is better) I will probably tape a piece of paper or something over the light. But really, it's not a big deal. It's how this works that is important. I kept this on high for the initial set up for about 30 minutes before turning it down to the 2nd setting. I can tell the difference in the air quality already. Yesterday was the 4th of July, so the air quality today wasn't the best. Add in the indoor pets too and you get a dusty, stuffy house. Since I have had this on I noticed the air smells better and cleaner. No stuffy nose either. I'm sure that this will work perfect for our house. Will update my review if anything changes.
