I'm not sure what the issue was with the tablet I received but after charging it I started the setup process. After entering my language and country it proceeded to set up my wifi connection. This 10.1" PEICHENG Android Tablet is a great value for about 70 dollars USD (at the time of this review) but has some big security issues. It is running a custom ROM (version of Android), is locked into Android 13 with the most recent security update of Jan 2023, and is unable to be further updated or upgraded past the Jan 2023 version. Running an old, out-of-date version of Android is a security risk. If you use this on your home network, consider making a guest network in case the device is hacked so it doesn't have access to other devices on your router. Get a good antivirus and a VPN if possible. Do not do any online banking, and don't save any passwords to this device. I created a separate google account to log in to this tablet, which means I can't access any of my purchases or apps from my main google account, but it gives me peace of mind in case this device is ever compromised. Yes, the outdated version of Android really is that big of a risk for malware and hacking. I ran this through a battery of tests and could not find any bloatware, spyware, malware, or viruses that come pre-installed. Other than the custom ROM (which is common on devices like these to strip out anything that might slow down its already meager speed/power) there is nothing sketchy about the device itself. The only security risk I was able to find is the out of date version of Android that is unable to be updated. BATTERY lasts a long time if you are surfing, word processing, reading, etc (about 6 hours) but drains very quickly if you are watching something or playing games. Expect to get maybe 2-3 hours of use out of this if you're watching movies. It can last for days and days and days on standby, though, and only lost about 1-2% battery per day when not being used. SPEED is decent- slower than most modern computers and cellphones, but still faster than devices from even 5 years ago. For the price point it is surprisingly fast. SCREEN/VIDEO QUALITY is okay for basic tasks, but will be low quality for streaming. Youtube defaults to 480p and other streaming apps that don't have a directly selectable streaming quality, like Amazon Prime, will look very low-res and pixelated. There is no way to upgrade this, expect SD or lower quality for streaming. COLORS on the screen are muted and not very vivid. The screen itself is very blue-tinted, which I've noticed seems to be the trend with lower-end electronics. USABLE HARD DRIVE SPACE is around 50 GB. It CHARGES via USB-C and takes a long time to charge. From 25% battery, it took me 5 hours to charge to full. Out of curiosity I tried using it with my Google Pixel fast charger but it was not compatible. This tablet will only charge at regular speeds so it takes foreverrrrr to get a full battery. This handles standard mobile games from the Google play store fairly well, which surprised me, but definitely will not handle any computer games. I like using this for reading E-books, typing Word documents, watching Youtube, chatting on messaging services, and playing Google Play games. I use an antivirus, VPN, guest network, and do not have this linked to my main Google account and that feels like adequate enough security for me personally despite the outdated version of Android.
