My main problem with the original 54mm filter basket that came with my Breville espresso machine was that it was not able to hold 18+ grams of coffee without spilling over the basket. This basket is deeper and is definitely able to accommodate 18+ grams of grind in it without spilling over. You will need to use a bottomless portafilter to fit this basket however - original portafilter will not work with this one. Though it is able to comfortably fit 18+ grams of coffee without spilling, the coffee it makes is just meh. I've tried so many different things - adjusting the grind, tamping etc... but still was not able to produce the same quality shot I was able to with the original filter basket. I'm not sure it is the flat bottom shape of the basket verses more convex shape of the original... I went through many many many rounds of shots to calibrater to the basket without success. Super impressed by this high quality filter basket. It's my first normcore accessory and the quality definitely lives up to the hype. The set comes with the triple basket, a portafilter retention spring, a fancy puck screen, and some filter paper. I installed it in my bottomless portafilter and had to use the provided retention spring to get it to fit. I loaded it with 22g of locally roasted coffee and pulled a manual shot of 46g in 40 seconds. Wow. It was delicious. I'll play around with the ratios some more but for my first shot, I have to say I'm impressed. I've always struggled with channeling using the built in barista express grinder, but between the new puck screen and this basket I managed to have no channeling at all! 20g High Extraction Filter Basket is well-constructed. I've personally been using the 54mm in my Breville Barista Express. The stainless steel build quality as well as the packaging is impressive, and the inclusion of a puck screen and paper filters adds versatility to your brewing options. However, I've found that the basket can lead to very fast extraction times, especially when using a fine grind and 22 grams of coffee. My shots would often pull 40 grams in just 10-15 seconds, resulting in a sour and under-extracted cup. Tbh this has been my personal experience and definitely could be user error. I'm using a Timemore 078S and Breville Barista Express for reference. While the paper filters can help reduce fines and improve clarity, they can also subtly alter the flavor profile. Personally, I prefer the taste of espresso extracted without the paper filter. Despite all of this, basket is well-made and capable of producing good quality espresso. With careful experimentation and adjustments to your grind size, dose, and brewing time, I'm sure it's possible to achieve a more balanced extraction. I personally have reverted to some of my other baskets but will give this another try in the future. I'm giving 4 stars because the quality of the basket very beautiful and clearly very well made. (Update: This is my favorite basket) This is a neat basket. It comes with 200 paper filters, which are supposed to help with avoiding clogging of the many fine hole. When I first got it, I made two 22g espressos (approximately 44-50g out each) one with a paper filter and one without and I am not able to taste a difference between brewing with and without a paper filter. Personally, I don't normally use paper filters, but I can see why with the tiny holes on this Normcore filter, it might help more than a traditional portafilter basket. Taste-wise, I'd initially written this off as not necessarily being better than what I have dialed in with my typical double baskets that I usually use 19g in with. I viewed it's primary advantage being that it can make a larger drink in a single go. However, I've been able to pull some very tasty shots with this that are distinct from what I make with a traditional basket. I use my DF83V grinder to grind 22g a little coarser than normal, use a 1.7mm puck screen and then pull a manual duration shot with my Breville Barista Pro for 30 seconds or even longer, which does a great job of giving me a 44-55g espresso. If I had three of these, I wouldn't mind using these exclusively, but I have three portafilters with three virtually identical baskets, and I rotate through them each multiple times a day pulling double decafs that I use for iced and hot Americanos. Trying to adjust my work flow for this basket when I just want to make a coffee in three minutes or less multiple times a day doesn't really make sense. Speaking of work flow, since the average Breville user is probably just hitting the single or double espresso button, I'll reiterate that I think the best results with a Breville machine and this basket will come from pulling a shot manually. For my Breville Barista Pro, that means holding down the double shot button until the word "MANUAL" comes up on my display, and then ending the shot but hitting the double shot button again once I've drawn enough espresso out of the portafilter. This is a cool basket, and I do like it. But the fact that it's so different from my standard portafilters means it may not see regular daily use from me. Right now it's my go to for my one caffeinated shot of the day, but I may swap out the basket so that I have three portafilters with identical baskets for the decafs I pull throughout the day. Even if it does stop being my morning go-to basket, the next time I'm trying to dial in a new roast and my typical baskets aren't cutting it, I will definitely pull this back out and see what results I can get with this. In short, a cool basket, it lets you use more coffee at once, and it will behave differently. Whether or not that makes this basket worth it is up to you. Update: I ended up liking this basket so much that it's getting regular use as my go to for my first caffeinated cup of coffee every day, but then also seeing use for multiple cups of decaf. Yes, it's more hassle to make espressos this way, as 22g of shaken coffee wants to spill off the top of the basket, and the paper filter is either an extra step or more cleaning work if you skip it, and you have to use the manual setting on your Breville to brew any good cups with this basket since you're using more grinds than normal...but any extra workflow steps are worth it because this basket really does do a great job of making great espresso. This morning's espresso was so good I didn't add water to make it an Americano after tasting it, and that's when I realized I was keeping this basket in daily use, and that I should update this review to reflect that it has won me over.
