I got the 9948C3 model, and I don't have any issues during transfers. Did a few TB rsync and no dropouts. Speed is good (haven't yet actually benchmarked it). The drive starts to spin and then sounds bad like resetting and starting again, the heads move back to park on and on, and you need to take it out to prevent damage. I've tested with 5 different drives older and newer. WD 750Gb 7200rpm, Seagate 500Gb, WD 3TB, Seagate IronWolf 8TB 5400 rpm and they all work fine, just the Samsung doesn't (although the spinup amperage isn't that higher than the rest). Read more

I bought this enclosure because my old computer was running Windows 10 and i wanted to upgrade. The old computer was old school with multiple SATA storage drive slots for storage and DVD Players. The new computers didn't have that, so I needed something external. This fit the bill quite nicely. It's fast enough for me, way faster than the old computer. I have had no issues with it. I wish the power button was on the front side, though. As far as the unit itself, the drawers are easily removed and installed. I do have to unscrew the drives if i want to change them out. a snap fit would be better. opverall i rate this as a quality item and would buy it again if i needed. Read more

Very pleased with this unit. It seems well made, with a solid feeling aluminium housing, and it runs off an IEC 'kettle' mains lead, so no mucking about with power supply blocks. It also has a 'real' latching power switch, so if there's a power cut it'll come back on afterwards. Seems to perform fine. It found the three disks I installed without any issues and runs very quietly - I wanted a unit with a fan but you can't hear it operating. Be aware this is just a JBOD setup. There's no RAID options (which is one of the reasons I chose this unit) so there's nothing to set up. Just plug in the disks and go. Excellent! Read more

J'ai acheté ce boitier pour mon Mac Mini pour pouvoir lui mettre des disques dur (et pas des SSD) externes et ne pas à avoir plusieurs boitiers externes à gérer. Chaque disque dur est vu comme un disque séparé dans Mac OS et c'est vraiment comme si on avait 4 boitiers externes branchés séparément au mac Le boitier est très bien fait, et permet de rajouter (ou enlever) des disques à chaud, c'est à dire sans avoir besoin de l'éteindre. Avant de rajouter un 3e disque, j'avais par précaution d'abord éjecté les 2 premiers depuis Mac OS, pour éviter de perdre des données au cas où le disques seraient momentanément déconnectés au moment de l'ajout du 3e Mais il ne me semble pas qu'ils aient été déconnecté a aucun moment Il y a un voyant sur chaque tiroir qui indique si le disque est en train de lire, ecrire où si il est en veille. Car les disques peuvent se mettre au repos et c'est totalement transparent au niveau du systeme (ils ne sont pas éjéctés) et se remettent en route à la moindre sollicitation Le boitier à un ventilateur plutôt silencieux qui ne s'entend pas en usage normal. Le vrai plus de ce boitier par rapport à d'autres que j'avais regardé, c'est qu'il possède une prise USB-C supplémentaire pour pouvoir y chainer d'autres périphériques ce qui fait qu'on ne perd pas une prise USB-C sur la machine (Apple étant, comme toujours, radin en terme de connectique, c'est vraiment appréciable) J'y ai branché un SSD externe, et malgré la lecture sur les disques du boitier Orico, le SSD à donné de très bonne performances, avec exactement les mêmes performances que lorsque branché directement sur le mac Ce qui serait l'idéal c'est qu'il ait un (ou plusieurs) emplacement pour des SSD NVMe (qui semblent devenir la normes) car sa connectique SATA le limite aux SSD SATA (avec un adaptateur 2.5 vers 3.5 à acheter en plus) et aux performances qui vont avec. A noter que ce boitier n'a pas de fonctionnalités RAID ni réseau, ça n'est pas un NAS. ORICO Daisy Chain 4 Bay Hard Drive Enclosure (Model 9948C3) uses a VL817 chipset which appears to have a buggy UAS implementation (in my own observations and other reports online, including LKML). Under heavy and sustained write loads, drives are prone to drop from the USB bus (including loss of drive status LED on the enclosure itself) until the enclosure power is reset (not just a host reboot or unplug/replug). Disabling UAS reduced my drive throughput, while greatly improving stability. The amount of performance reduction will depend on your workload. The device is still detected at 10Gbps - the loss in performance is due to the overhead of older, sequential BOT vs. the newer UAS protocol. Disabling UAS on Ubuntu Linux (as root): `echo options usb-storage quirks=2109:0715:u >/etc/modprobe.d/ignore_uas.conf; update-initramfs -u`. Instructions for Windows can be found online. I don't need to put 12 SATA SSDs behind a single USB port often... in fact needing to do so is extremely rare. But that's what I need today due to a large data migration. I could get by with multiple enclosures and a USB 3.2 hub, but the integrated hubs on these devices are quite conveniant. I opted for USB enclosures over SATA/SAS for the flexibility. Once this data migration is done, I'll be left with three decent USB-SATA enclosures that I can use on their own, or re-combine in the future. My expectation is that they would be stable (even with UAS enabled) when used for normal desktop or read-heavy workloads, requiring no special configuration. I have no complaints about build quality, or even the plastic trays. At this pricepoint, the build quality exceeded my expectations. The power button is a physical toggle button that depressed when "on", and therefore will come back online after a power outage (unlike at least one other device in this category). Hardware seems fine, not really stressing it out so far. The only technical issue so are is that the first drive bay (top) does not work when hot swapping, only when turning on the enclosure with the drive installed. The other issue I have is that the product came already opened. Do not know if it was a return for hardware issues or not fitting the previous owners needs. I have this connected to a Mac mini M4 but running a ZFS storage pool under a Ubuntu Parallels VM and it has been working great. I was a bit worried when I saw some other reviews about potential instability. But for my use case or archiving media, it has worked well so far for the couple of days that I've had it and have been using it heavily.
