The great thing about this robot tank is that you can download a sample code and upload it to an Arduino board. Then, you can modify it as you feel fit. Since this is for an Arduino, code is in C/C++ which is perfect for me as I'm currently learning that programming language. Update: I'm now using it on raspberry pi 4. They have a python version script too so I went based of that script then wrote a gui script using pyside6 and used realvnc to remote access to it. This tank chassis is so well made that it is hard to belive. It is extremely sturdy ans it is easy to mount all kids of this on it. You can see from the picture that I have an ultrasonic sensor, an AI camera with pan/tild base, and a Lidar. I love it. Read more

Love the chassis itself and once you get it working it does exactly as advertised. Motor driver with a 11v battery works great. The problem is you may find yourself struggling with the included documentation. It takes you to a Google Drive folder that is a bit disorganized and much of the commented code is in Chinese. It seems like many files and instructions are missing. If you are skilled, you can figure it out but if the documentation was better, it would save you a lot of time. Again, the Arduino is fine but if you want to use the raspberry pi it gets a bit iffy. There is an unofficial python script on Github (hiwonder tank chassis by robswc) that works well. I saw the reviews talking about the docs and wondered just how much do you need? When the thing is this obtuse, you need em. There are zillion mounting holes none of which appear to line up with the current version of even the controller board. Even the cad model which might be otherwise helpful is stupidly complex to the point it brings Onshape and Freecad both to their knees. It's a shame because the hardware appears solid. 1. drive speed is 33% of what's shown in the promotion videos. 2 Loaded 5kg (= 50% of the advertised payload) and the vehicle struggles over a smooth surface with a loud engine noise and small bumps cause the engine to stall. 3. the advertised suspension is a design flaw: even with a payload of 5k, the springs remain completely unimpressed. There is no suspension. Another problem is that - if you press down the chassis by hand - the springs are suspended in such a way that they are not pulled but bent under load, which makes a real suspension on the short suspension travel hardly possible. But maybe it's better this way, because if the 4 wheels give way at the bottom, the chain play increases significantly as it is not absorbed anywhere. 4. the off-road performance is also poor. The chassis struggles up slight bumps - loaded only with the battery. The design of the wheel hub at the gearbox exit with its protruding locking screw is ideal for wrapping stalks and leaves around the axle, so that everything has to be laboriously cleaned after a short off-road use to prevent the motor from blocking. 5. links to demo software lead to crappy code with chinese comments. 6. Turning motors to alter cable out position I had to open the gearbox - yes, there is a tiny bit of lubricant in - but nowhere where the teeth on the gear wheel could get in touch with. And plain bearings too don't have any lubricant. After lubricating, the noise level has dropped significantly, the system is noticeably more performant - but still lags behind the sample videos. As the loss caused by returning it to the USA will only increase, I have decided to control the motors via ESC and RC radio remote control. This means that the chassis can still be used as a camera dolly for the very light cameras with some restrictions. I'm not sure whether a retrofit with more powerful motors will be worthwhile for this would cause crafting a new midchassis to make more room for more powerfull motors. I wired up the motors for RC control running it off of a standard 11.1V LiPo battery. I added lights and an FPV camera so I can run it in the crawl space under my house to look for leaks and rot/termite damage, that's how I justified it to myself anyway. Fun project, working great so far. Read more
