If you have lots of devices that connect to the internet then this is perfect to keep them all in check, sometimes the basic router will fit the job but I wanted stability and that came at a high cost, I'd say the router is worth it as long as you know the benefits of each feature and don't mind paying the cost, this router should last me at least 5 years since it supports the AC technology devices which I don't even have yet. I couldn't be happier with Netgear X4S router. Before writing this review I've been using it (testing) daily to operate my Amazon Fire TV streaming 4-8 hours of HD a night via 5GHz WiFi, iPad Pro, iPhone 6+ and 6s, Dell XPS 15 9560 and XPS 15 M530, Ooma phone, Apple TV 4, Roku 3, and Belkin WiFi Switches. Oh, and a 2017 Ford Fusion car (it connects to the internet over WiFi probably so spies can hack into and crash my car one day). This router has been running non-stop for 2 months and has not missed a beat. Totally stable, very reliable. WiFi streaming is flawless, and speed tests to the internet have topped out at 136Mb/s over 5GHz AC WiFi verified on my 9.7 ipad pro and Dell XPS 15 9560. When I received it, I immediately updated the firmware, as there was a major security problem with the firmware it shipped with. This was easy, and uneventful. The new firmware appears to be bug free. I'm also using many of it's advanced features such as NAS using a flash drive. All my devices (including iOS) can see the router's network drive, and read and write fast without issues. I also use the VPN capability, and managed to get it working on my cell phone and iPad. This great for being able to see the content on your NAS drive, or talk to any computer or printer on your home network. You can even set it up to surf the internet from your home's internet connection from any location on the internet. Very useful for services like Playstation Vue when you're on the road and want to watch local channels. I even used it to get around corporate firewalls. A very nice feature that is also stable, and works as advertised. You do have to be fairly technical to make it work.. I can tell you from previous experience, getting a reliable router is very difficult, and many routers have bugs and stability issues. So far, no problems here. Initially I had some weird "lock up" situations - but a firmware update got rid of those issues. I use this device on Verizon and had no problems activating and using it. I work in a building with terrible cell service overall, my phone spins and spins, and when I pop this out - BOOM - it connects to the cellular network sometimes 5G/4G and my phone can access internet like I was at home. The battery does quite well when I'm mobile. When I need it for backup purposes at home, you can plug it in and use a different mode that greatly expands Wi-Fi coverage. The onscreen display is great giving you all the information you'd need at a glance - including battery usage, number of connected devices and data usage. As mentioned earlier, I am totally satisfied by it's reliability. No issues. 6 Month Update: It has been over 6 months since I bought and installed this amazing router. Here are my specs: 1. Number of times I had to restart the router: 0 2. Number of times the internet was dropped: 0 3. Number of times the speed was down: 0 This router has surprised me and keeps me extremely satisfied. 3 Month Update: It has been over 3 months since I bought and installed this amazing router. Here are my specs: 1. Number of times I had to restart the router: 4 times Reason: Twice because the modem had to get updated and once because the router firmware was updated. 2. Number of times the internet was dropped: 0 times 3. Number of times the speed was down: 0 times In conclusion, my purchase of this modem has been one of the wisest decision I have made. It is still going strong and I hope it continues that way. I plan on updating after another 3 months. I am from an electrical and computer engineering background. While I am certainly not an expert on networking, I am decent enough to get into the details such as advanced configuration of router. All these years, I was depending on various single band routers (TP-Link, Almond securfi etc). However, there was still these on going issues such as signal dropping, lack of coverage, decline in speed etc. Upon some research, I find that Netgear Nighthawk AC1750 router had among the highest reviews for dual band routers, in relative to other brands such as Asus or Linksys. So, I decided to give this a try and ensured that I buy an insurance from Square Trade, while ordering it over Amazon. Being a prime member, I got this product within a day. Hooking up the cables and setting up the SSID and passwords was a breeze. As several others have pointed out, simply follow the instructions that is given in the booklet that comes along with this product. While setting up the router, I recommend the following: 1. Use the CAT 5e cable that comes along with the router to connect it with your modem. 2. Hoping you have an android phone, use Wifi Analyzer to find out the channels that don't have much traffic and set that channel on your router. 3. Ensure your router is away from other electronic devices and is placed atleast couple of feet above the ground. Since I have set up the router, I have been getting close to 90 MBPS, whenever I do a speedtest. My comcast package allows me 75 MBPS. A note, I did purchase the latest Arris SB6190 surfboard modem, that allows 16 bonded channel downstream. I personally believe, the beamforming technology in this router simply makes it superior to other brands, in that, it concentrates on communicating with only connected devices, rather than worrying out emitting the signal throughout the place. The router is above average in size and looks awesome. It's been over 10 days since I purchased this router, and I have never faced any issues that I had with my previous routers. The speed is consistent even during the peak hours. I am hoping this would be the router that I have been waiting all along, which doesn't require me to spend time on restarting or reconfiguring. Es un buen router de categoría intermedia. Desempeña excelente todas sus funciones, buen alcance y buena velocidad (400mbps en promedio por Wifi). Doble banda 2.4 y 5 Ghz. Ademas soporta una buena cantidad de dispositivos conectactos vía inalambrica. Puede exprimir la velocidad de las conexiones de fibra (menores a 400mbps). Ademas ofrece la capacidad de instalar el firmware DDRT, este firmware ofrece capacidad de personalización extrema. (También es muy fácil regresar al Firmware de fabrica). El único punto en contra es que al configurar un cliente VPN por openvpn la máxima velocidad alcanzada es de 45mbps. Esto se debe a que el proceso de cifrado lo hace el procesador del router y no le alcanza para poder realizar el proceso mas rápido, degradando la velocidad. Netgear really churned out an awesome piece of high tech equipment with R7000. Setup: It was supposed to be easy but the blame was not on the router. It took 2 hours for me and Netgear to figure out why a fully configured router was losing internet access. So, the initial setup takes less than 10 minutes if at all. I have to give 5 stars to Netegar. Now the problem I faced - The router is physically placed near the home theater equipment I can connect a lot of devices using hard wire method. One of the devices turned out to be culprit for my connection woes - and that device is Comcast's HD cable box. When connected (either directly to the router or through a Gigabit network switch which in turn connected to the router), the default IP address would change from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.100.1, thereby causing all devices to lose connection. Netgear and I spent time trying to pinpoint the problem and eliminating one device after the other. We then entered in the browser the auto-modified ip address and it was populating a window showing "Pace Micro Plc" username and password. Anyway, to cut short the story, we removed Comcast box from connecting directly to the router or to the switch and instead connected to the back of another device which has LAN ports. Problem solved. Netgear customer support from Philippines is simply superb. They are patient, pleasant, very courteous, and most importantly, they know their stuff and even if they don't, they will get the answer quickly for you. And when they say, they will call - they surely will. Connectivity: Once the problem mentioned above was resolved, everything else was a breeze. The router interface page is great. I put the primary 5 and 2.1 is hidden mode which is working with all my devices. The guest accounts are visible. The devices are connected without a drop in connection, granted this has only been a day since I fired up the device and more updates will follow in the months to come. At this point, I don't have any AC devices. Only N devices and they all work fine. I have at least several devices connected to it. Signal Strength: Strong signals anywhere in the home. Speeds are very good no matter where I am in the home. I heard that 5 ghz signal weakens the farther the distance and I experienced that problem with my Cisco EA4500 but this one seems to beam the 5 ghz signals to the far end of the world and perhaps other planets too (if the antennas are any bigger). 5 stars here. Thanks to mega-sized antennas. Features: QoS automatically identified my streaming databases on multiple devices and is now configured. No buffering issues in the limited testing I have done. Other standard set of features you would expect in a router are all there. One annoyance is the bright LED lights that a lot of people complained about. I spoke with Netgear and there is no way to disable them. I used, like others, black electrical insulation tape to cover them. So much for spending $200 and taping the damn thing. I am not impressed with it. But, I am not reducing any stars for this and am hoping that Netgear will add this feature in the next firmware. Between Asus and this one, I went with Netgear because it has been in industry building networking products only. Asus on the other hand has its finger in every pie you can possibly imagine so I am not sure that their heart is focused solely on building the best networking products. In addition, I've read that Asus does only downstream internet speed optimization where as R7000 does upstream as well as downstream but if you don't game this might not make a lot of difference I suppose. Yes, with those lights it can be in your face though. Yes, it is a tad bit bigger than others but I don't care so long as it performs well. I bought this to replace my problematic Airport base station. I'd have to say by comparison that it's definitely not plug and play, but now that I've got it set up it's working fine and somewhat faster than the Airport. Mi caso antes de comprar el router fue como creo mucho otros, usaban el modem/router que te da el proveedor de internet y el lag en juegos era muy fastidioso o cargar videos o streams tardaba su momento. Tras una investigacion, llegue a la conclusion que el router "stock" de la compañia de internet no daba para mas, decidi que era tiempo de comprar un router mejor. Tras leer varios reviews en internet, me decidi ir por este por lo que ofrecia y no creo haberme equivocado en la decision. Se necesita tener un conocimiento basico de redes para hacer el setup del router, pero no es nada que con una investigacion en google de 10/15 minutos no resuelva. La aplicacion del celular es sencilla y cuenta con muchas de las funciones que necesitas. El interfaz de la computadora es un poco mas complicado pero ofrece muchos ajustes, como la posibilidad de tener una red de invitados, tener QoS y restringir el acceso a otros dispositivos. Tambien tiene control parental pero ese no tuve la oportunidad de probar. El router tiene las dos bandas 2.4 y 5 GHz y junto con el MUMIMO dan una experiencia de internet muy buena. I used to have huawei 5G mobile WiFi pro, and it was amazing until I had issues with the service provider. The battery lasts for more than 24 hours even when connecting more than one device. I purchased this device “Netgear” and I hoped it would be better than the Huawei device. Unfortunately, the battery lasts 9-10 hours max, it will last more if less devices are connected. What shocks me that even if you charged the device and switch off the electricity and the device is switched off too, it will keep consuming battery life ( how and why I don’t know). So you have to keep it plugged to the charger until you decide to use it on the go. Comparing to other 5G devices and the price I paid for, this is a major disappointment. Read more
