WHAT IS IT? Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid (fatty acid). It is important for keeping your memory sharp, and for stabilizing your mood and reducing feelings of stress, depression, and anxiety. Phosphatidylserine does this by regulating important neurotransmitter hormones in the brain such as norepinephrine and epinephrine. Food sources include soy (the main source), white beans, egg yolks, chicken liver, and beef liver. WHAT IS GOOD ABOUT THIS PRODUCT OVER OTHERS? 1. This one is SOY FREE. Instead of being derived from GMO soy, this product is derived from Sunflower lecithin. For that reason alone, this product will be more expensive than comparable products made with soy. Phosphatidylserine products made with sunflower lecithin instead of soy are not easy to find and they tend to be even more expensive than this one is. 2. This product is GMO-free. 3. All NOW products are GMP certified and produced according to GMP Standards (Good Manufacturing Practices). That essentially means that what is advertised is what guaranteed to be in the product. However that doesn't mean the raw materials in the product are produced in the U.S. They are actually sourced from overseas. WHAT ABOUT THIS PRODUCT COULD BE IMPROVED ? 1. There are a fair number of binders and fillers in this product like magnesium stearate, cellulose, silicon dioxide, and stearic acid. Many supplement products have these fillers but where possible, I prefer to purchase supplements that do not contain these filler ingredients, even though the price will be higher. Because who wants to ingest all these man-made, mysterious substances? 2. This product contains a small amount of calcium carbonate, presumably as a buffer for your stomach, although the directions say to take this with food. It's a small amount but calcium carbonate is poorly absorbed and made from rocks, so I wonder if another calcium derivative could be used instead.... 3. It would be awesome if the raw materials were made in the U.S. FIINAL THOUGHTS: This seems like a solid product and a solid brand, although I would feel even better if NOW's supplements had less filler ingredients. Also, keep in mind that the recommended, therapeutic dose of phosphatidylserine is 300mg, although I would recommend starting with 150mg. At 300mg, that makes for 30 servings per bottle, or roughly $1 per day. That's not cheap and puts it in the middle range of comparable products from Integrative Therapeutics, Olympian Labs, and Designs for Life (all are more expensive), and Nutricost and Swanson (both less expensive). Otherwise, I am finishing up another brand and then I will start on these. I usually get good benefits in both memory, stress response and concentration when taking phosphatidylserine. I recently discovered I had an issue where my cortisol spiked at night, instead of when it is supposed to spike in the morning. This caused me difficulty falling asleep at night and also waking up feeling tired.
