I received this game specifically to write a review. That said, I try to be honest and open in all my reviews. (Please see the enclosed pictures.) Summary: Netflix: Trending Now is a game for 3-10 players, ages 14+. The game box says that a game lasts about 20 minutes. My gaming group found an average game lasted between 30-45 minutes. This is a variant of the Apples to Apples and Cards Against Humanity type of game. In this case, one player is "the judge," and other players attempt to win the favor of the judge and have him pick their content and plot twist combinations. As with all of these types of games, the key is to know your judge and pick combinations that will appeal to him or her. There are a few nuances with this game. At the beginning of the round, the judge turns over a situation card. This sets the tone for the judge, and it might be something like "you are trying to reconnect with your dad" or "you need something light hearted." Whether the judge pays much attention to this is entirely up to the judge. Once the situation is revealed, each player plays a content and plot twist combination face down. Everyone flips at once, and the judge decides which is the best for the situation. The final wrinkle is that the person sitting to the right of the judge is the drama llama, and he or she flips a drama card that potentially alters play that round. It might be instructions to the judge like "pick the combination that will cause the biggest stir," or it could be instructions to the drama llama like "pick who will not score this round." The content will be recognized as recent Netflix series and mini-shows. The plot twists are purely goofy things like "rewritten by an eight year old" or "performed by hot dogs." Whichever player has five of his or her ideas selected first, wins the game. All in all, it is fun, relatively family friendly entertainment, and you do not really need to know anything at all about Netflix to enjoy it. On to the Dr Games’ Criteria … GO/NO GO Criterion • Complexity: (GO): It is very straightforward. If you have played Apples to Apples, Cards Against Humanity, or a variant then you have already played this game. • Balanced: (GO ) I give it a marginal go for this criteria. Because the combinations are clearly tied to a player, the most popular person in the group is likely to win. For super competitive groups, once you get your fourth selection then you are going to have to wait a long time to get your fifth as you will purposely not be selected. • Chance (GO) The cards you get and the situation and drama are random. They might or might not have any impact on how the judge operates. • Clarity: (GO) The game is relatively simple, and the rules are clear. • Reasonable Time: (GO) You will be able to play an entire game in about 45 minutes. Bonus Criteria • Social: You will have table talk and joking during this game. Because the judging is utterly arbitrary, it makes it easy to fudge things a little for the younger or less popular players if you are a parent or senior in the group. • Unique/Interesting Mechanics: The addition of the drama llama and drama cards is a fun twist. • Informed: You might learn something about current Netflix shows. • Rewards Throughout: Yes, once you win a selection, you keep it.
