I've tried nearly all alarm clocks- phone alarm, digital clock, old-fashioned wind-up clock, sunrise alarm, etc. None of them worked. This thing though...when this goes off, it wakes me up immediately with a jolt of panic running through my body from the sheer volume of it. It's very sturdy and durable. Mine has taken a beating from bringing it along on my travels but it's still working great. It's easy to set up the clock and alarm, and the side buttons are clearly labeled. I'm just curious about why it goes off ten minutes before the time you set it. The instructions tell you to set it for ten minutes after your wake-up time if you don't like that. But what's the purpose in the first place? The only thing I really dislike about it is that you have to hold down a combination of buttons to do some things, and it's difficult to hold down the small side buttons while trying to maneuver around whatever it is you're trying to do. I have long had trouble dragging myself out of bed in the morning. I set alarms and don't even remember turning them off. Not a problem with this alarm. It is a bit of a trick to turn it off (you have to hit buttons on the front and side at the same time) and when it goes off you will jump awake and your heart will start racing. No way will you get back to sleep after the terror of the alarm and the fumbling panic trying to make the ear splitting noise stop! In fact, simply the memory of it makes my pulse start racing when I set it in the evening. And for this I give it five stars - it will definitely get you up and moving. If you, like me, have tried every other alarm, and been able to blissfully doze through them - this one is the winner for you. And if you're not quite so heavy of a sleeper you can always try the low or medium volume settings. I was able to sleep through those ones, so high it is for me. Cons: I would not consider this a good travel alarm, as anyone on the same floor/in the same building/on the same block may also be awoken by it. Even on the lower volumes quite very loud. Also, it has a somewhat similar sound to my fire alarms, which I am not completely keen about - I am afraid that my kids could become habituated to the sound/ignoring loud noises due to hearing this alarm from my room too often. Having just received this a few days ago, I cannot speak to its durability and such, but I will tell you this: if this device does not wake you, you have likely assumed room temperature. I find this device very easy to use, set-up, and understand. I'm 52, and while I know my way around tech, I'm not an engineer. Couldn't be much simpler to use, from my perspective. As for the loudness: there are three settings, low, medium, and insane. I lost approx 70 % of my hearing in the Army, so I am difficult to wake at times; the medium setting, with the device approx 8 ft from the bed, and pointed towards me, is sufficient to wake me, and that's with the background noise of an AC unit. While I did try the high setting, I will offer you some advice: if you want to retain the hearing that you have, I would not recommend using this at the high setting in the same room, as it will surely cause hearing loss over time. It is that loud. I would only use it at the high setting if it were out in the hallway, or another room, AND if I had a pair of ear muffs (shooting type) to put on when picking the unit up and turning the sound off. I'm not joking about this. This is a great answer for those with trouble waking, that cannot afford to sleep through an important event, and it seems to be built in such a fashion that it should last for some time. I like this product because it works great for us heavy sleepers, however the whole town thought an air raid siren went off and they went running for cover causing mass chaos and panic .. after the bomb squad and SWAT team and Fire Department left my place disappointed that it wasn't an incoming air strike.... I still had to explain to the police and the Magistrate why I involuntarily caused civil unrest Citywide.... so thank you for an amazingly loud product that works in my opinion a little too well. I just feel bad for the senior citizens at the retirement home 6 miles away who had all of their pacemakers stop when this thing went off.... but the prison guard assured me that all 73 of them wont be filing any charges due to lack of pulse.
