I am a professional bassoonist. I play a standard model Fox bassoon. The upper tenon on the long joint presses right up against the fabric of the flap, offering no protection against any pressure applied to the top of the case. There is a foam block included for this area of the case that would protect the shorter gentleman's model long joint, but it must be removed for the standard length long joint. In addition, the bocal sleeves inside are very stiff and narrow; I did not feel at all comfortable about sliding my Heckel bocals into them. I purchased this as a possible replacement for my Bonna case, hoping that its upright position would make it more convenient for putting my instrument together in tight rehearsal spaces while adding some more storage, but as soon as I put the long joint in and saw how little protection it received I was wary, and after attempting to put my bocals into the sleeves I was convinced this was not going to work for me. The case itself is great, but I do have a serious issue with a strap. After only TWO uses the shoulder strap on my recently purchased case began to unravel along the stitching. I'm glad I noticed because if it had unraveled much more it would have completely failed. The case contained my instrument, music, and a few supplies and was not overloaded. I guess I could repair it with some electrical tape. I am very happy with the case itself but will use another method to carry it. I was disappointed such a basic part appears to be so poorly made - maybe I just got a 'bad' one. I include a photo of the strap... EDIT: I looked at the strap again and realized the strap was OK, but it was the shoulder padding which had unraveled. I simply removed the padding sleeve and am using it without. I'll be contacting Protec about this, but in the meantime I did raise my rating a point. EDIT: I contacted Protek and they apologized for the strap padding and promptly replaced the entire strap. Exactly what I needed. I have a traditional heavy wood case with leather outer cover that weighs more than twice the bassoon. My husband recently got a case like this for his cello and I was envious prompting me to investigate similar options for the bassoon. Wish I had this years ago. I have a Fox bassoon and it fits snugly and safely inside. Plenty of space and pockets for reeds, cleaning supplies and other stuff. Bocal pocket holds 2 securely inside the main pouch. Easy to get bassoon in and out. I actually use the case to hold the bassoon as I put it together - it stands nicely in it on the church pew where I play each Sunday. Well constructed, good zippers. I usually carry over my shoulder but the handle works fine, too. Highly recommend. Wish I had this during school when I was lugging it around with 3 other instruments at the same time. Read more
