As a relative novice to coloured pencils, these were a considered and relatively expensive purchase - there are a lot of options out there, at varying price points, and a lot of opinions too. Having used relatively cheap pencils before, I must say these pencils are a delight to use. Not only do they look good and feel good in the hand, they perform better than I could have ever hoped for. The colour range in this set 60 is about perfect - I did subsequently buy the ivory, sky blue and cinnamon (or light flesh) pencils to augment the range a little, but I don't think I'll need any more. The way the colours lay down on the paper is fantastic - you can go from delicate application to intense colour very easily without ever feeling that you're going to rip through the paper. And the vibrancy and intensity of the colours are absolutely superb. Blending and layering with these pencils is so easy. The colours just melt into each other. Burnishing is simple too - they react well to application of a white or burnishing pencil and solvent. I really can't fault these pencils. If, like me, you've spent an inordinate amount of time reading reviews and debating which pencils to buy, just buy these. You will not be disappointed. Read more

Okay, here begins the fangirling over my took-me-three-years-to-get-them Polychromos coloring pencils. I LOVE THEM!!! I did buy them a special fabric case, since I did not intend to keep them in the tin (which is actually a nice tin, by the way). I love colored pencils, and have a lot of different sets. Cheapies, mid-ranges, and my beloved Polychromos. I do tend to save these pencils for special artwork I plan to display. Color-fastness and all that good stuff. Once you sharpen these, you quickly learn they hold their points for a good bit of time. I use a lightish touch with them, but it goes beyond that I'm not pressing hard; they are made to last, and they do. They blend well, layer well, have rich pigmentation, and have a good-sized lead so they aren't going to get you through one picture and need replacing. The colors are gorgeous, with a full range. They are not super-hard, but you can't call them soft, either. They are what you would expect an oil pencil to be. But these are a high quality oil pencil, so I applaud their functionality as versatile colored pencils. As stated, they are vibrant, layer and blend, and feel really good in the hand. They do cost a bit, and it took awhile for me to fit them into the budget. I'm poor, so some will just order these and not have to do without some other supply they need more. These are worth the price, and a plus is that they are available open stock. I find that very attractive. If you are not sure you will like a harder pencil like a Polychromos, try buying one of the small sets, or a few pencils open stock, and see if you like them. If you do, start saving and looking for sales. You won't regret it. Quality is worth paying for. Read more

So I’ve used quite a few colored pencils. Prismacolor was my favorite because I thought it could not get any better than Prismacolor. Come to figure out, it’s no longer my favorite colored pencil anymore. Polychromos is expensive, but the investment is worth it as these are very high quality. I’ve not had a single breakage after 4 full color drawings and they hold a point for a LONG time, they are very pigmented and layer beautifully, no wax bloom, beautiful colors, nice thick core, easy to hold and color with, they sharpen well and not to mention the lovely shavings smell of cedar wood! Knowing that each other is lightfast with no fade for a lifetime is icing on the cake. Polychromos is the best colored artist pencil I’ve ever used. I highly recommend these colored pencils to anyone who has the patience to use these correctly with the right paper to just buy these! It is not a waste of money and I’m getting a larger set.
